Nottinghamshire Independent Domestic Abuse Services (NIDAS)
NIDAS is a registered charity, formerly known as Mansfield and Ashfield Women's Aid. Our main aim is to help people experiencing domestic abuse.
We also work hard with other agencies to raise awareness of domestic abuse and help prevent people becoming victims of this crime.
Since 1989 specialist domestic abuse support workers have helped women and children who have experienced either physical, sexual, financial, emotional or psychological abuse. In April 2009, NIDAS started a new service aimed at raising awareness and supporting male victims of domestic abuse.
54% of UK rapes are committed by a woman’s current or former partner.
On average 2 women a week are killed by a male partner or former partner: this constitutes around one-third of all female murder victims.
In England and Wales, about 45% of the women killed every year die at the hands of an intimate male partner or ex-partner.
Domestic Violence costs the country £23billion per year. In Mansfield and Ashfield alone it is estimated that over £100million is spent on dealing with the impact of domestic violence.
There is no mainstream funding for NNIDAS. We rely on donations and grants from other agencies.
In this country a phone call is made to the police every minute of every day.
It is estimated that only a quarter of all domestic violence is reported to the police.
In 2008-2009 there were over 5,000 domestic violence incidents reported to the police in Mansfield and Ashfield.
